A WiFi QR code is a code that holds your network name and password. When a guest scans it with their phone camera, the phone offers to join your WiFi in one tap. They never see the password and never type a single character. For a cafe, a clinic, or any place where people ask for the WiFi, it removes a small daily hassle.
You can make one for free in about a minute. Here is how, and where to put it once it is ready.
The reasonWhy a WiFi QR code is worth it
Reading out a long password ten times a day gets old fast, and customers often type it wrong and ask again. A WiFi QR code on the table or wall solves that. The customer scans, taps to join, and gets on with their coffee. Your staff stop being a help desk for the WiFi.
It also looks tidy. A small printed code beats a sticky note with the password scrawled on it, and it tells customers you have thought about the small details.
The methodHow to make it
Open the free QR code generator and choose the WiFi tab. Then fill in three things.
Step 1: Network name
Type your WiFi network name exactly as it appears in the phone's WiFi list. Capital letters and spaces matter, so copy it carefully.
Step 2: Password
Type the WiFi password. Again, get it exactly right, including capital letters. If your WiFi has no password, choose the no-password option instead.
Step 3: Security type
Most networks use WPA or WPA2, which is the default. Unless your network is very old, leave it as WPA. Then download the code.
Scan your own code before you print it. Open your phone camera, point it at the code on the screen, and check it offers to join the right network. If it does, you are ready.
In the roomPrint it and place it well
Print the code at a comfortable size, around 5 cm by 5 cm for a table or counter. Add a short line of text next to it so people know what it is, such as "Scan to join our WiFi." If many of your customers speak Arabic, add the same line in Arabic too.
Good places to put it: on each table, by the till, on the wall near where people sit, or on a small stand. Put it where a seated customer can reach it without getting up.
Worth knowingIs it safe to use?
A WiFi QR code is as safe as printing the password on a sign, and it looks cleaner. Anyone who can see the code can join, so use it for your guest WiFi, not your private staff or office network. Keep your back-office systems on a separate network that is not shared with customers.
If you change your WiFi password later, the old code stops working. Just make a fresh code with the new password and reprint it.
Quick answersCommon questions
Does it work without an app?
Yes. The normal phone camera reads it on iPhone and most Android phones. There is nothing to install.
Can I change the colour to match my brand?
Yes, and it is free. You can change the code colour and even add your logo. Just keep the contrast strong so it still scans easily. Our guide on adding a logo to a QR code covers this.
